The Last Knock at Midnight Chapter 1: The House That Never Slept

# The Last Knock at Midnight

## Chapter 1: The House That Never Slept

The rain had not stopped for three days.

Black clouds covered the sky like an endless blanket of darkness, and the small town of Ashmore looked almost abandoned. The streets were empty. Every shop had closed before sunset. Even the stray dogs had disappeared.

People here believed one thing.

Nothing good happens after midnight.

Ethan Walker didn't believe a single word of it.

At twenty-eight, he had spent his entire life trusting science over superstition. Ghosts were stories for children. Demons belonged in movies. Every mystery had a logical explanation.

That belief brought him to Blackwood Cottage.

The house was huge.

Too huge.

Three bedrooms.

An old fireplace.

A wooden staircase that groaned under every step.

A backyard swallowed by an ancient forest where sunlight barely touched the ground.

The rent was unbelievably cheap.

So cheap that Ethan almost laughed while signing the agreement.

The landlord, Mr. Holloway, never smiled.

His pale face looked exhausted, as if he hadn't slept in years.

When Ethan finished signing the papers, the old man placed a rusty iron key on the table.

"One rule," he said quietly.

Ethan looked up.

"Every house has rules."

Mr. Holloway stared directly into Ethan's eyes.

"If someone knocks after midnight..."

He paused.

"...don't answer."

Ethan smiled.

"What if it's the police?"

"No."

"What if someone needs help?"

"No."

"What if it's you?"

The old man's expression didn't change.

"Especially if it's me."

A cold silence filled the room.

Ethan laughed awkwardly.

"You really know how to welcome new tenants."

The landlord simply stood up and walked toward the door.

Just before leaving, he whispered something Ethan barely heard.

"It always knocks three times."

Three days later...

11:58 PM.

The storm outside had become violent.

Rain slammed against the windows.

Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the forest for a split second before everything drowned in darkness again.

Ethan sat alone in the living room with a cup of coffee and his laptop.

His internet had stopped working an hour ago.

His phone showed...

No Signal.

Strange.

The power flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then returned.

He looked outside.

Nothing but thick white fog.

The forest had completely disappeared behind it.

It looked as if the entire world had vanished.

The old grandfather clock beside the fireplace ticked loudly.

Tick...

Tick...

Tick...

Each second somehow sounded louder than the last.

Ethan checked the time.

11:59 PM.

The clock continued.

Tick...

Tick...

Tick...

Then...

DONG...

The first bell echoed through the empty house.

The second.

The third.

By the twelfth bell...

Midnight had arrived.

Complete silence.

Even the rain stopped.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

As if someone had pressed a pause button on the entire world.

Ethan frowned.

Something felt wrong.

Then...

Knock.

A single knock echoed through the front door.

He looked up.

Probably the wind.

Ten seconds passed.

Nothing.

He smiled at himself.

"You're starting to believe those stupid stories."

He picked up his coffee.

Before it reached his lips...

Knock... Knock... Knock...

Three slow knocks.

Exactly as the landlord had described.

Not loud.

Not desperate.

Almost...

Patient.

Ethan stood up.

His heartbeat became slightly faster.

He walked toward the front door.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

He reached the peephole.

Looked outside.

Nothing.

No person.

No car.

No footsteps.

Only endless white fog.

He unlocked the chain.

His fingers touched the doorknob.

Then...

His phone vibrated.

Unknown Number.

He answered.

A terrified voice whispered...

"Don't open the door..."

Ethan frowned.

"Who is this?"

The voice continued.

"I'm you..."

"...and you're about to make the biggest mistake of your life."
