The Doorman's Shift | A Terrifying Three Knocks Horror Story – Scary Verse
The Doorman’s Shift
Leo always laughed at local folklore. So, when he managed to rent a stunning, dirt-cheap penthouse in an old, gothic-style apartment complex in upstate New York, he ignored the low ratings online.
The night he moved in, the elderly building caretaker, Mr. Vance—a man with a deeply scarred face and empty, sunken eyes—gave him a chilling piece of advice:
"Son, if you hear three sharp knocks on your door between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM, do not open it. And no matter what happens next... do not look behind you."
Leo just smiled, chalking it up to an old man trying to scare a city kid.
02:14 AM
For the first three nights, everything was dead silent. But on the fourth night, a violent thunderstorm hit the coast. The power grid blew, plunging the entire building into pitch-black darkness. Leo turned on his phone’s flashlight, trying to ignore the howling wind.
Then... THUD. THUD. THUD.
Three heavy, rhythmic knocks echoed through the heavy oak door. Leo’s heart skipped a beat, but he reasoned it must be Vance checking for leaks or storm damage.
He walked over and looked through the peephole. Outside, the corridor was pitch black, but in the beam of his flashlight, he saw a figure. It was Vance, drenched in a yellow raincoat, staring straight down at the floor.
Leo unlocked the deadbolt and cracked the door open.
"Everything okay, Mr. Vance?"
The figure slowly tilted its head up. Its skin was translucent white, and where its eyes should have been, there were only two weeping, hollow black sockets. It grinned, stretching its jaw wide, and whispered: "I told you, son... never open the door after three knocks."
The Realization
Terror slammed into Leo's chest. He violently slammed the door shut, locking it with trembling hands, breathing heavily in the dark. He backed away, trying to convince himself he was hallucinating from exhaustion.
Right then, his phone buzzed in his hand. A delayed emergency email from the building management company had finally loaded over the weak cellular data:
URGENT NOTICE TO RESIDENTS:
We regret to inform you that our night caretaker, Mr. Thomas Vance, passed away tonight in a fatal hit-and-run at 1:00 AM down Route 9. Please keep your doors locked until police arrive.
Leo’s blood turned to ice. If Vance had died at 1:00 AM... who was standing outside?
Do Not Turn Around
Before he could run, a wet, scraping sound echoed from the dark corner of his living room. It sounded like something heavy and boneless crawling along the floorboards.
A freezing breath brushed against the back of Leo's neck, carrying the scent of damp earth and rot. Then, Vance’s voice whispered right into his ear, coming from inside the room:
"And I also told you... no matter what happens, DO NOT LOOK BEHIND YOU."
Instinct took over. Leo swung his flashlight toward the sound. The beam illuminated the wall, revealing a shadow that wasn't human. It was a massive, multi-limbed entity, its body contorted like an arachnid, wearing Vance’s torn, smiling face.
Leo tried to scream, but the air caught in his throat. The flashlight slipped from his paralyzed fingers, shattering on the floor. In the absolute darkness, the only sound left was the sickening crunch of breaking bones.
The Next Morning
When the state troopers breached the apartment the next morning, the place was completely undisturbed. There was no sign of a struggle, and no sign of Leo.
The only thing they found was his smartphone on the floor. The front-facing camera had recorded a final 10-second video: a pitch-black room, and two pale, human-like hands reaching out from the ceiling, pulling the phone—and the viewer—into the dark.
